POC approves initial list of 126 athletes to Asian Games
THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Executive Board yesterday approved the inclusion of 126 athletes as first batch members of the Philippine Team set to participate in the Asian Games this November in Guangzhou, China.
Asian Games Chief of Mission Joey Romasanta said the list approved by the Execom will be the initial batch of nominees to the Asiad.
“This is only the initial list as we are still waiting the results of other athletes,” said Romasanta. “Tulad ng basketball at dragon boat na lalaban pa lamang next month sa international tournament,” he added.
Aside form Romasanta, members of the POC screening committee are veteran mediaman Clarito Samson, former Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) secretary general Moying Martelino and educator Chippy Espiritu.
POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco said the approved number is only partial and they are expecting an additional 150 depend.
“Partial list pa lang ito at subject pa for review depende sa development ng performance nila before the deadline for the submission of a final list,” he said.
The Guanzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee has set Sept. 15 as deadline for the submission of entries.
PSC chairman Richie Garcia said the PSC is ready to finance the RP delegation numbering to 300 athletes and sports officials.
“Under the budget, we already earmarked P30 million for the Asiad participation, so we can finance a delegation up to 300 people,” said Garcia, who attended the Execom meeting along with commissioners Chito Loyzaga and Akiko Thompson.
“This is another historic moment in Philippine sports. For the first time the officials of sports bodies are here, joining hands for the sake of the athletes,” said POC chairman Monico Puentevella.
