Richie Garcia takes his oath as new PSC chief

RICHIE Garcia is set to formally assumed office at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) today, according to Malacanang source.

Garcia, who was highly recommended by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, already received instruction from Malacanang to head the P200 million annual budget sports agency, according to official who has the knowledge in the appointment.

The source said Garcia is set to meet members of the outgoing PSC Board led by chairman Harry Angping after the morning flag-raising ceremony and scheduled to take his oath before President Noynoy before lunchtime.

“Everything is set. After cross examining the recommendation of Cong. Peping and background check, PNoy is convince that Richie (Garcia) is fit for the job,” said the source.

Remate Tonight tries to verify the information to Garcia but he failed to return a call.

In an early interview, Garcia neither confirmed nor denied his appointment.

“It’s still speculation until the appointment paper was formally signed by the President,” said Garcia.

‘If ever, I’m ready to serve the government again and give the best I can to help uplift the morale of the athletes,” he added.

Cojuangco, PNoy’s maternal uncle, on Thursday announced over Usapang POC in Sports Radio, that, indeed, he recommended Garcia’s name as replacement of Harry Angping.

He also supported the appointment of tennis president Buddy Andrada, basketball icon Chito Loyzaga and little league official Jolly Gomez as commissioners as well as the retention of swimming champion Akiko Thomson in the PSC five-man board.

Cojuangco said Garcia, a golfing buddy, is fit to handle the job since he has the experience in the program and management system of the commission being a former commissioner twice under two previous administrations.

“We’re running out of time. We have only four months away to Asian Games and we need to do something and act immediately to prepare our athletes,” said Cojuangco.
