Archbishop Cruz a mere ‘puppet’
THE lawyer of former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Jesus Verzosa yesterday disclosed that a powerful group is behind retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz’s bold move to make public a list of alleged “jueteng” operators and protectors.
Lawyer Benjamin delos Santos said the group supporting Cruz will eventually benefit from the result of the ongoing jueteng fiasco.
“This is not just a mere zarzuela. This is like a puppetry. We know who’s controlling these puppets and the good bishop may be just one of them (puppets),” Delos Santos said.
Verzosa is among those in the list of jueteng protectors that Cruz exposed during Tuesday’s Senate hearing on jueteng who allegedly received payoffs from illegal gambling operators.
Delos Santos, however, said Verzosa will not press charges against the bishop.
“We know the law. It was brought out in the halls of Congress during a Senate investigation and it’s privileged. We cannot sue him. But if he goes out on the streets and shout names, we can sue,” the lawyer said.
He said Verzosa’s camp has received reports that a “good amount of lobby money” will be released to fund a demolition job against “certain personalities.” Anthony Vargas
