Army overruns NPA camp in ComVal
GOVERNMENT troops overran a communist rebel camp over the weekend following a firefight on a mountainous portion of Compostela Valley province, military reported yesterday.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo said the camp was located in the vicinity of gold-rich Sitio Taglawig, Brgy. Panoraon in Maco town.
The camp was overrun after a brief firefight between troops of the 71st Infantry Battalion (IB) and a band of around 60 heavily armed New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, the report said.
The soldiers were dispatched to check on reports about the presence of armed NPA rebels in the said area from the civilians who complained of extortion activities of the rebels.
A platoon of soldiers engaged the rebels in a 10-minute firefight before the rebels abandoned the camp.
They left behind broken pieces of exploded IED parts, magazines for Armalite and M14 rifles and subversive documents.
No casualties were reported on the government sides as pursuit operations against the rebels are still on. Anthony Vargas
