MLQU downs Star Group
JOPHER Custodio saved the day for Manuel Luis Quezon University for the second straight game.
Custodio pulled off another monster game, capped by a put back as time expired to lift MLQU to a thrilling 80-78 win over the Star Group of Publications in the MB Invitational basketball championship at the Lyceum gym in Intramuros Manila.
Custodio’s game-winning basket came after Dennis Rodriguez of Star Group tied the score for the last time at 78-all on a long three-point shot with 10 seconds left and Alvin Vitug of MLQU missed a contested jumper from the right corner.
The 6-3 Custodio then eluded his guard and darted from nowhere for the winning putback against a phalanx of Star defenders just before the final buzzer sounded.
The win enabled the Sherman Crisostomo-mentored Stallions to take the solo lead with two straight wins and relegate the Starmen to 1-1 in this two-month long tournament supported by Smart Communications, Dickies Underwear and PRC Managerial Services.
Custodio finished with a game-high 20 points for the Quiapo-based team, which debuted with a similar come-from-behind 73-72 win over Lyceum of the Philippines last week.
The win overshadowed defending champion Wang’s Ballclub, which survived a gallant stand by Philippine Air Force, 82-72.
Former Talk and Text player Jonathan Aldave scored 17 points for the Mandaluyong-based squad of coach Pablo Lucas and playing manager Alex Wang. Radito Torres
