MLQU, Star dispute MBL leadership

OPENING-day winners Manuel Luis Quezon University and Star Group of Publications dispute the early lead when they meet today even as defending champion Wang’s Ballclub opens its title-retention bid against Philippine Air Force  in the 2010 MBL Invitational basketball championship at the  Lyceum gym in Intramuros, Manila.

Game time is 7 p.m. with odds about even between the Stallions of coach Sherman Crisostomo and manager Ma.Victoria Chan and the Starmen of coach Rene Recto and manager Mike Maneze.

MLQU defeated Lyceum of the Philippines, 73-72, while Star Group subdued EJM Pawnshop,  62-58, in a pair of exciting matches in this two-month long  tournament supported  by Smart Sports, Dickies Underwear and PRC Courier.

Equally-exciitng is the Wang’s-Aiir Force tussle at 8:30 p.m.

The other participating teams are Hobe Bihon  (coach Junnel Mendiola/manager Bobby Co), and Royale Business Club (coach Ferdie Orna/manager Bong Paggabao).

Tournament director Albert Andaya said the participating teams will play single-round elimination with the top two teams advancing to the smeis outright with twice-to-beat advantages. The next four teams will then dispute the remaining two semis berths in a pair of knockout games.  Radito Torres
