P1-B DENR computer project hit
A MILITANT group yesterday pressed Environment Secretary Ramon Paje to withdraw a proposal seeking a P-1 billion budget for the procurement of 50,000 computers, software and web cameras.
Fernando Hicap, chairman of the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), said that is more than twice the number of employees of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
“Secretary Paje should recall this outrageous, illogical and out-of-this-world proposal to purchase 50,000 personal computers. This is brazen waste of public funds,” Hicap said.
He said the project fund should instead be re-channelled to mangrove reforestation and artificial coral reef reforestation projects.
“It seems to us the DENR is not really keen in conducting reforestation and rehabilitation campaign. It seems to us Secretary Paje is interested in making the DENR the bastion of corruption in the country, next to Malacañang, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Bureau of Customs and the Department of Agriculture,” Hicap said.
He said the amount should specifically used “for the clean-up, reforestation and rehabilitation of Manila Bay from North to South encompassing the areas of Bataan, Bulacan, Navotas, Malabon, Manila, Pasay, Paranaque, Las Pinas and Cavite.”
The proposal to buy computers, web cameras and software worth P1 billion was discovered in last week’s congressional budget hearing. D’Jay Lazaro
