PNP goes on alert during PNoy’s trip

HOURS before President Benigno “PNoy” Aquino III left for the United States for a state visit, the Philippine National Police (PNP) raised its alert level status.

PNP spokeman Senior Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. explained that the police and the military normally raise the security level whenever the commander-in-chief leaves the country.

“This is but normal,” Cruz said. “There will be increased police visibility operations and tighter security measures on public places, transport terminals and places of convergence.”

He said that while police forces and units in Metro Manila are on full alert, the rest of Luzon and Visayas will remain on heightened alert status.

Police forces in Mindanao have been on full alert since the killing of a top Abu Sayyaf member early this month, Cruz said.

The PNP spokesman said the full alert status of police forces in Metro Manila will remain in effect until President Aquino returns on Sept. 28.

President Aquino left the country last night to attend the UN General Assembly in New York, where he is expected to have a one-on-one meeting with US President Barack Obama. Anthony Vargas
