PNP intensifies ‘jueteng’ crackdown; arrests 168

IN A matter of one week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has arrested 168 persons reportedly involved in illegal gambling activities nationwide on September 15-22.

Data released by the PNP’s Directorate for Operations (DO) said that except for five regions and one unit, all police regional offices and support units conducted operations against illegal gambling, particularly “jueteng.”

Last week, retired Dagupan-Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz revealed that several high members of the Aquino administration have received millions of pesos of “jueteng” payoffs from illegal gambling operators.

This prompted newly appointed PNP chief Director General Raul Bacalzo to immediately issue a directive to all police regional offices and support units to crack down on jueteng.

The data said the National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) has the most number of apprehensions with 90, followed by the Police Region Office (PRO) 8 with 18.

The rest of police operations are as follows: PRO 1 or the Ilocos Region, one; PRO-Cor or Cordillera Region, three; PRO-3 or Central Luzon, four; PRO-4A or Southern Tagalog Region, 12; PRO-5 or Bicol Region, five; PRO-6 or Western Visayas, five; PRO-7 or Central Visayas, two; PRO-9 or Western Mindanao, 11; PRO-11, four; PRO-12 , five; PRO-13, one; and CIDG five.

The PRO-4B, PRO-10 and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) have conducted operations against illegal gambling but yielded negative results.

PNP spokesman Senior Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. pledge to regularly update the public on the progress of the campaign.

“We will release data as obtained from the ground,” Cruz said.
