‘Juan’ leaves 10 dead

TYPHOON “Juan” left the country yesterday after lashing Northern Luzon with strong winds and rains and leaving at least ten people dead and nine others injured.

As of 5 a.m. yesterday, Juan was spotted some 210 kilometers West Southwest of Laoag City moving at speed of 22 kilometers per hour (kph) with winds up to 160 kph in the center and gustiness of 195 kph.

According to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), the center of the typhoon is estimated to be some 600 kilometers Northwest of Laoag City by this morning as it continues to head towards the South China Sea.

The NDRRMC update said that Juan, perhaps the most powerful weather disturbance to hit the country this year, has left at least three people dead in Cagayan, Kalinga and Baguio City, with nine people still missing in those areas.

Vicente Decena was drowned in Cagayan River during the onslaught of the typhoon last Monday, while Aileen Reseicio of Rizal town in Kalinga and Andres Realina of Baguio City were pinned to death by fallen trees.

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said four people in Pangasinan were also killed when structures collapsed on them, while three still unidentified persons drowned in Isabela province.

A total of 1,425 families or 6,789 persons in four regions in Northern Luzon were evacuated to safer areas.

The NDRRMC also reported that 25 houses in Tumauini in Isabela were blown away and destroyed by Juan’s strong winds.

It said Juan also toppled power and communication lines, cutting off power supply and communication lines to around 210 municipalities and cities in Northern Luzon.

Isabela province, the hardest hit by the typhoon, has been placed under a state of calamity since Monday, the NDRRMC said.

Public storm signal warning no. 2 remained hoisted over the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union, Pangasinan and Zambales, which are expected to continue experiencing winds between 60 and 100 kph.   Anthony Vargas
