3 Pinoy advance in Pattaya Final 4
PATTAYA – Two-time National Open champion Lee Vann “The Slayer” Corteza scored back-to-back victories to advance to the semi-final of the 2010 Sangsom Pattaya 9-Ball Invitational Pool Competition over the weekend at the Royal Garden Plaza in Pattaya, Thailand.
The 31-year-old Corteza, whose stint here is backed up by Kopiko and Energen, ousted Nitiwat Kanjanasri of Thailand (9-4) in the Last 16 and Fu Chi Wei of Chinese-Taipei (9-7) in the Last 8 to advance to the Final 4 of the single knock-out tourney which offers 300,000 Baht prize money to the champion.
The Davao City native, top player of Jonathan Sy’s Negros Billiards Stable’s, will meet Liu Hui Chang of Chinese-Taipei, tormentor of Filipino pool legend Efren “Bata” Reyes (9-3), in the semifinals.
“We just hope for a possible All Filipino finale in Pattaya 9-ball,” said Corteza referring to the other half of the semifinals to be disputed by countrymen Dennis ‘Robocop’ Orcullo and Ronato ‘Volcano’ Alcano.
“Let’s pray Van-Van (Lee Vann Corteza) win his game against Fu (Fu Chi Wei ) for a possible All Filipino finale in Pattaya 9-ball meet,” At least sure tayo sa Pinoy ang korona,” said Sy.
Orcullo outclassed Chris Melling of England (9-5) and Liu Chien Chieh of Chinese-Taipei (9-6), respectively while Alcano beat Lee Chenman of HongKong (9-4) and Stevie Moore of the United States (9-8). Both players are supported by Perry Mariano’s Bugsy Promotions.
The Semifinals is race to 10, while the Final is race to 1 winner break format.
