4 cops surrender to NPA
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—Four policemen and a barangay treasurer have surrendered to more than 50 New People’s Army rebels after an ambush in Barangay Libertad, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
According to a sketchy radio report, the policemen were identified as Chief Insp. Apollo Abao, PO2 Martial Corvera, P03 Leoderick Urbiztondo and SPO2 Leandro Lumaing.
Abao, Corvera and Urbiztondo are all in critical condition in a hospital in Butuan City, the report said.
It was reported that Barangay Chairman Dencio Manliguez of Barangay Mabuhay, Prosperidad asked the Prosperidad Municipal Police Station to send policemen to his barangay to secure the people who are attending an assembly there.
Manliguez called for the assembly to discuss the issue of relocation among his constituents.
But when the four policemen were on their way home after the assembly, the rebels opened fire on them.
For lack of firepower and support, the four policemen surrendered to save their lives.
The rebels carted away the policemen’s firearms, including four M16 Armalite rifles and a 9mm pistol. Bong D. Fabe
