Govt troops, NPA rebels clash in Catanduanes
GOVERNMENT troops and a group of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels clashed anew in a remote village in Catanduanes early Sunday morning killing one rebel, military reports said.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo said that the encounter between government troops and NPA rebels took place at around 6 a.m. in Brgy. Barihay in San Andres town.
The reports said that troops from the Army’s 83rd Infantry Battalion along with a team of Scout Rangers were dispatched to the said village to check on reported presence of armed men extorting money from villagers.
Upon reaching the area, troops were fired at by group of 20 rebels led by a certain “Ka Tabs” and under the KSPN “Pusa,” prompting troops to returned fire and engaged the rebel in a 30-minute firefight, the reports said.
One of the rebels was killed while the rest immediately fled towards different direction leaving behind the body of their slain comrade along with a M16A1 rifle and several subversive documents, the reports said.
No one was hurt on the government side, as troops immediately mounted a hot-pursuit operation against the fleeing rebels, reports said.
The body of the still unidentified rebel was brought to San Andres Municipal Police station for autopsy and possible identification. Anthony Vargas
