Insurance for news workers pushed
MILITANT congressman has batted for a mandatory additional insurance coverage for local journalists, employees of media entities on field assignment and freelance journalists “to help address the situation of the Philippine press that labors in among the most dangerous countries for their profession.”
In filing House Bill 2842 titled the Journalists’ Insurance Act of 2010, Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño wants additional insurance benefits from Social Security System (SSS), as provided for under Republic Act No. 8282, and from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), under R.A. 8291.
A former journalist himself, Casiño said “media practitioners need additional insurance coverage to be provided by media entities to journalists and their employees on field assignments and front-line media persons which shall provide the following minimum benefits:
· Death Beneits of P200,000 for all mass media practitioners and employees on field assignment who will perish in the line of duty
· Disability benefits of up to P200,000 for those who will suffer total or partial disability, whether permanent or temporary, arising from any injury sustained in the line of duty
· Reimbursement of actual medical expenses up to P100,000 for those on field assignment who will be hospitalized or who will require medical attendance for injuries sustained while in the line of duty. D’Jay Lazaro
