KMP wants softdrink deal investigated
GROUPS supporting the striking farm workers of Hacienda Luisita yesterday asked both Houses of Congress to probe a reported plan of Hacienda Luisita Inc. to supply sugar to a Chinese softdrink manufacturer.
In a statement, the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) appealed to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Speaker Feliciano Belmonte to initiate separate or joint hearings on the Wahaha Group and Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI) deal.
“The HLI management is again compromising the basic interest for land of 10,000 farm worker beneficiaries in the name of juicy proceeds from illegal and immoral sale of the sugar estate to foreign corporate clients of the Cojuangco-Aquino family,” said KMP secretary general Danilo Ramos and Pamalakaya Vice chairperson Salvador France in a joint statement.
