Militiaman goes berserk, kills 6
A MILITIAMAN shot and killed six of his colleagues Sunday night inside a detachment in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo said the suspect, Olegario Vocal Jr., was eventually shot dead by responding government troops.
Maj. Gen. Romeo Lustestica, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, reported that the incident took place at around 7 p.m. at a militia detachment in Brgy. Palid.
The reports said that Vocal, armed with a government-issued M-14 rifle, fired at his fellow militiamen without provocation.
Five of the victims died instantly. They were identified as Narciso Rudas, Nilo Rudas, Ike Hario, Edgar Sibeoland and Salvador Belono.
The sixth fatality, who has yet to be identified, was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.
Vocal fled after the shooting, but government troops from the G Company of the Army’s 18th Infantry Battalion caught up with him some 600 meters away from the detachment.
Instead of surrendering, Vocal began firing at the troops, prompting the soldiers to fire back and fatally wounding the suspect. Anthony Vargas
