THE members of the national team that competed in the recent World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansysk , Russia spring back into local action when they take part in what promises to be a star-studded 1st PACE Tuguegarao Open Chess festival starting on Saturday in the Cagayan provincial capital.

While Grandmasters Wesley So, John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo will vie in the Open tournament, a nine-round active contest, GM Eugene Torre will join fellow GM Jayson Gonzales and International Master Yves Ranola in simultaneous exhibitions against 30 players each, Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) president Gonzales said in yesterday’s PSA forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch in Manila.

Gonzales said the event is jointly organized by  engineer-couple of Abraham and Ma. Theresa Cuaresma, who were also present in the session sponsored by Shakey’s PAGCOR and Outlast Battery.

“The Cuaresmas want to bring chess developments to the grassroots which is why we are holding the PACE Open Chess Festival in Tuguegarao,” said Gonzales of the two-day chess showcase to be held at the second floor of the Paseo Reale mall in Tuguegarao.

“We want to help pace and GM Gonzales in his desire to nurture a new generation of chess hopefuls,” said the Cuaresmas, whose eldest son, seven-year-old Abel Isaac, is a PACE member.

“We were encouraged by the development of Abel Isaac when he joined PACE and we think chess is one way of developing the mental skills of a child,” they said.
