Press Club thanks Senate for swift action on FOI bill
THE National Press Club (NPC) has expressed gratitude to Sens. Gregorio Honasan and Antonio Trillanes for acting swiftly on the revived freedom of information (FOI) bill that the previous congress failed to deliver.
NPC president Jerry Yap thanked Honasan, chair of the senate committee on public information and mass media, and Trillanes, who heads the committee on government reorganization, for prioritizing discussions on the measure.
“We are grateful to these lawmakers as well as those in the House of Representatives who share the belief that an FOI law is indispensable to the exercise of press freedom,” Yap said.
The NPC president instructed Director Joel Sy Egco, who also chairs the Club’s press freedom committee to represent the NPC in yesterday’s hearing.
Egco reported that the joint committee has adopted the NPC’s proposal to reduce the required compliance period for governments offices from the proposed 10-day period to just 2-5 days.
Earlier, the NPC appealed to President Aquino to certify the bill as urgent.
