Scrap SLEX toll hike, fishers urge lawmakers

A FISHERFOLK alliance has urged senators and members of the House of Representatives to unanimously pass a joint resolution scrapping the implementation of toll increase at the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

In a statement, Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) said Congress can exercise its legislative powers to spare millions of people in Southern Luzon and the National Capital Region from suffering from the 250 percent hike in SLEX toll fees.

“President Benigno Simeon Aquino III will not stop the toll fee increase at SLEX because he wants to lure foreign investors to take over SLEX,” Pamalakaya national chair Fernando Hicap said. “So the ball is now Congress court to stop this highway robbery in broad daylight.”

Hicap said toll hike “is not only a case of highway robbery in broad daylight. This burdensome hike in toll fees is tantamount to economic sabotage.”

Following the Supreme Court ruling junking the petition against SLEX toll increase, South Luzon Tollways Corp. (SLTC) president Isaac David said the increase toll rates at SLEX will be implemented by next week or early November.

David said the toll increase would enable STLC to pay its P1-billion. D’Jay Lazaro
