Sports bigwigs join World Summit
SEPARATION of sports and government and the development in sports medicines are top of the agenda to be discuss when the world’s top sports leaders meet in the first World Olympic Sports Convention on Oct. 18-14 in the world-renowned Acapulco in Mexico.
Sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and organized by the Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOC), a total of 205 member countries confirmed attendance in the biggest sports summit.
Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose ‘Pepping’ Cojuangco head the RP delegation which also included POC chairman and weightlifting chief Monico Puentevella and secretary-general Steve Hontiveros.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia will represented the government.
There are several agenda prepared in the sports gab but Garcia takes special interest to topics like “sports autonomy” and “agreement between government and NOC”.
“Government intervention in sports is a big issue among the national sports associations, that’s why this event is very important to the PSC,” said Garcia.
“The role of government in sports will be discussed in the convention.”
The sports gab is also expected to touch on issues in doping, Olympic education, women in sports, high-level training, sports medicines and Olympic solidarity.
