Teachers troop to Comelec to demand immediate payment for election service
LEADERS and members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) trooped today to COMELEC main office to demand the immediate payment on the service they rendered for the October 25 Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan Election.
“Until now, we have not received the payment for the service we rendered as Board of Election Tellers (BETs) and Inspectors of the Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan Election,” ACT Secretary General Ms.France Castro said.
Teachers strongly condemn COMELEC’s infringement of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) it signed with the Department of Education (DepEd) which stated that the manner of payment of the compensation of our Board of Election Tellers – half of the total amount will be paid when our BETs get their election paraphernalia and the other half when election has been concluded and they return the ballot boxes with filled up ballots and election returns.
Castro said that the COMELEC failed to comply with this.
“Hanggang ngayon hindi pa kami nababayaran at nagawa pang umalis ni Chairman Melo sa kabila ng sandamakmak na problema ng nakaraang eleksyon!” Castro exclaimed.
Castro added that the teachers dedicatedly served as BET/BEIs every election, in spite of of the risks and hardships they encounter, and the government does not provide adequate compensation. “We don’t deserve this kind of treatment,” she said.
ACT demands for the immediate payment of the service they rendered, and told COMELEC to give additional compensation of Php2,000 to all BETs for the great part that teachers have done to salvage the COMELEC failures during Monday’s elections. The additional Php2,000 compensation that ACT demands is over and above what the COMELEC promised to pay for teachers acting as members of BETs in areas the polls were postponed.
Castro also criticized the COMELEC’s inability to competently conduct a smooth and peaceful election. And the teachers always bear the brunt of the problems of the baranggay election.
“Kapalpakan ng COMELEC ang dahilan kung bakit magulo ang eleksyon na ito at naging delikado ito para sa mga BET. Kapalpakan rin ng COMELEC kung postponed ang election sa maraming baranggay,” Castro explained. “Kami pang mga guro ang sumalba sa mga kamalian nila, kung kaya naman dapat na bigyan ng dagdag na kumpensasyon ang mga guro para dito.”
