ASG incapable of staging terror attack in Metro Manila – AFP
A SENIOR military intelligence officer yesterday said Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and other terror groups are not capable of mounting a terror attack in Metro Manila.
Although the ASG still active, they are actually loose groups. Their capabilities are already dissipated, Col. Samuel Narbuada of the office of the AFP deputy chief for intelligence during a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo.
Narbuada added: They (ASG) have no external support, and now they have been concentrating on criminal activities.
Earlier, the National Capital Regional Command (NCRCom) reported that the ASG and other terror groups still look at Metro Manila as a prized target for terror attacks.
Aside from the ASG, the NCRCom said the Indonesia terror Group, Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), the MILFs Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Rajah Solaiman Movement (RSM) continue to recruit new members in the metropolis.
Narbuada said JI, ASG, RSM, MILF-SOG along with the New Peoples Army (NPA) continue to threaten the country.
Actually there have been reports that these threats are still concentrated in Southern Philippines, Narbuada said.
In his after-tour-of-duty report, former NCRCom chief Maj. Gen. Arthur Tabaquero said that terrorist groups have continued to use the National Capital Region (NCR) as transient and support base to strengthen their links with other terror groups,
The release of the report came amid the Aquino administrations protest over travel advisories issued by the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Canada and New Zealand warning their citizens of a threat of terror attack in Manila and Mindanao from extremist groups.
The NCRCom report added that the communist New Peoples Army (NPA) through its Metro Manila Regional Party Committee (MMRPC) pose the most active threat in Metro Manila.
Tabaquero said Metro Manila is a logical target for bombings and other terror attack for obvious impact effect and media mileage, Anthony Vargas
