Ayon kay Labog, November 30 will mark five months of Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s regime, yet we have yet to hear him speak a word about workers’ wages. Even before he became president, we have been calling on him to address our campaign for a substantial wage increase.
On the other hand, he keeps on giving guarantees to big foreign and local capitalists that they will continue to profit big time under his term. We know what this means for us workers: the government will continue serving up to capitalists more of the same cheap and repressed labor, sabi ni Labog.
Sinabi naman ni Ferdie Gaite, tagapangulo ng Confederation for Unity, Recognition and Advancement of Government Employees, co-convenor ng KPMM, “PNoy has defended the proposed national budget in which a huge allocation again goes to paying the foreign debt, beefing up the military, and providing opportunities for corruption to top bureaucrats. He has shown no interest towards increasing the salary of his own government’s employees.”
“For years, contractualization has steadily eaten up regular work in the country and has pushed workers to low-paying and poor-quality jobs. Aquino has made it clear that he will maintain such favorite scheme of capitalists to push down wage levels and increase profit in the process. He gave a green light to the mass layoff and contractualization of thousands of Philippine Airlines’ employees. Not only does the scheme attack workers’ wages, it also attacks workers’ job security and, in effect, their very right to unionize,” dagdag ni Gaite.
