PNoy told: Shut down coal-fired power plant
A militant group yesterday urged President Benigno “PNoy” Aquino III to immediately stop the operation of the $104-million coal-fired power plant in Iloilo City after residents near the areas close to the 164-megawatt plant smelled foul odor during the test run conducted between 12:30-2:15 p.m. on Nov.13.
“Mr. President, please don’t gamble on people’s lives and the people’s environment just to carry out this grossly detestable public-private partnership. Just tell the coal fired power plant operators to pack their things up and never comeback to Iloilo,” said Fernando Hicap, chairperson of the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya).
The Pamalakaya official demanded Mr. Aquino to instruct the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to recall the environmental compliance certificate issued to Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), a subsidiary of the Global Business Power Corp (GBPC).
“The results of the test run show this $100-million coal-fired power plant is a huge environmental and health disaster in the making,” said Hicap. (D’Jay Lazaro)
