Reelected barangay chairman shot dead
A RE-ELECTED barangay chairman was shot dead by still unidentified suspects while visiting his departed relatives in a public cemetery in Masbate late Monday afternoon, the military reported yesterday.
Reports reaching Camp Crame identified the victim as Vicente Lacbayug, who won his re-election bid for the chairmanship of Brgy. Dayhagan in Aroroy town last October 25.
The reports said that the victim was visiting the tombs of his dead relatives in Sitio Mahaba in the said village when two unidentified suspects armed with .45 caliber pistols shot him without any warning.
The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby local hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians from multiple gunshot wounds that he sustained in the attack, the reports said.
The relative of the victim told police that Lacbayug went into hiding a few days before the recently concluded village and youth council elections after receiving threats from suspected communist rebels.
The victim’s relatives recalled that months before, Lacbayug refused to sign a petition against Filminera Minning Firm being forced on him by unknown persons. Anthony Vargas
