Troops overrun NPA camp in Samar
GOVERNMENT troops overran a New People’s Army (NPA) training camp in a remote village in Eastern Samar following a fierce firefight Sunday afternoon, military reports said yesterday.
The rebel camp, which was located in Sitio Sapia, Brgy. Magsaysay in McArthur, Eastern Samar, was attacked by the combined elements of the Bravo Company of the Army’s 14th Infantry Battalion and a squad of troops from the Army’s 81st Military Intelligence Company.
The reports said that troops were dispatched to the area early Sunday to check on the reported presence of rebels conducting training in the hinterlands of the said town.
The government troops then stumbled upon a vast rebel training camp, which has 20 bunkers and a training ground measuring 50 by 30 meters that can accommodate over a hundred rebels.
The reports said that a 30-minute firefight quickly ensued between government troops and at least 30 rebels manning the training camp before the rebels withdrew towards the direction of Sitio Carbon, Brgy. Huknan of Giporlos town.
Troops were able to recover from the camp 10 backpacks, assorted magazines with ammunitions for M14 and M16 rifles and voluminous subversive documents, the reports said. Anthony Vargas
