10 of 12 abducted in Basilan released
TEN of the twelve fisherfolks abducted by a group of gunmen in a remote village in Basilan province last Saturday were safely released on Tuesday afternoon, police reports said Wednesday.
The fisherfolks were abducted last Saturday afternoon at Sitio Layohan in Brgy. Matata, Ungkaya Pukan town gunmen led by a certain Commander Puwih Ambali over alleged clan fued over land, police reports said.
Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., said the 10 were released by their captors Monday afternoon through the efforts of the Provincial and Municipal Crisis Management Councils.
Cruz said the 10 were released by their captors without the exchange of any ransom money or guns which was earlier demanded for the safe release of the hostages.
Kidnapping for ransom is a common incident in Basilan province, home to Islamic militants and the allegedly al-Qaeda linked Abu Sayyaf. Anthony Vargas
