14 Chinese seamen rescued off Batanes waters – PCG
FOURTEEN Chinese seamen were rescued, but ten others remain missing after their cargo vessel sank near Batanes province on Friday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Sunday.
Two crewmen of the Panama-registered M/V Hong Wei, which sank off Itbayat Island while sailing to Shan Tong, China, were plucked from the sea by a Taiwan Coast Guard helicopter, the PCG reports said.
PCG commandant Adm. Wilfredo Tamayo said 12 more Chinese seamen were also rescued by the M/V Shun Tong, a passing Chinese cargo ship.
However, the PCG Action Center said aerial and surface searches have not located the remaining ten crew members of the ill-fated vessel.
The PCG’s aerial search resumed yesterday while the Marine Environment Protection personnel from the Coast Guard’s Basco station will check reported sightings of an oil leak in the area where the ship sank. Anthony Vargas
