4 dead, 1 hurt in Quezon encounter
FOUR persons were killed and other one was wounded in an encounter between police elements and suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Quezon province.
The encounter between the police and rebels started at around 2 p.m. when a group of armed men blocked the path of an R and R bus along the national highway in Barangay Ajos, Catanauan town, police reports said.
Quezon Provincial Police chief Senior Supt. Erickson Velasquez said the rebels stopped and forcibly boarded the bus and ordered its driver at gunpoint to proceed instead to an undisclosed location.
However, the police official said that the bus was then stopped at a police and military checkpoint near the headquarters of the army’s 74th Infantry Battalion triggering a firefight between both sides.
Authorities are still trying to verify the identities of the slain suspected rebels, while follow-up operations are still being conducted. Anthony Vargas
