Mass offered for Cagayan hotel blaze victims
The Catholic Church has offered a Mass for the victims of Sunday’s hotel fire in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan that left 16 people dead.
Tuguegarao Archbishop Diosdado Talamayan and other church officials celebrated Mass on Sunday afternoon in memory of the victims and those who are now suffering the consequences of the disaster.
Fr. Fidel Agatep, vice chancellor of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, said the local clergy has expressed their deep concern for the victims, 10 of them nursing graduates in town to take a licensure examination.
Agatep, in an interview over church-run Radio Veritas, said the Mass was attended by many students, mostly coming from nursing schools in the city.
He said they are also trying to get in touch with the officials of the University of La Sallete, a Catholic school, which the majority of the fatalities came from.
Agatep also said that the La Sallete Fathers are currently giving “spiritual counseling” to the parents of the victims.
The death toll from the fire that swept through the five-story Breakfast Pension Hotel before dawn on Sunday climbed to 16 when one of the injured died in a hospital a day after the blaze.
The latest fatality was a male nursing graduate, an asthmatic and suffered minor burns, who died late Sunday due to suffocation.
Reports said eleven other people were hurt, while 19 guests and staff of the budget hotel were rescued unharmed. CBCP News
