Israeli warplanes attack Gaza

Israeli warplanes carried out three raids on the Gaza Strip early Saturday, hitting smuggling tunnels under Egypt’s border and a military site for Hamas, witnesses and security sources said.

The airstrikes caused damage to the tunnels that the Palestinians use to bring in goods from Egypt to the Hamas- controlled Gaza Strip, the security sources said.

The third attack targeted a training camp for Ezz El-Deen Al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas in Central Gaza.

There has been no word on casualties, as Hamas has evacuated its security and military positions for fears of Israeli raids, given increasing tension over the past week.

Smaller Palestinian groups have launched rockets into Israel recently, despite Hamas’ attempts to enforce a shaky cease-fire with Israel.

On Friday, a senior Hamas leader, Mahmoud Zahar, declared that Hamas is still committed to the truce that Hamas and Israel separately announced after the end of Operation Cast Lead here in January 2009. The operation left some 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead.

Earlier this week, an Israeli unmanned drone fired a missile, killing five Palestinian militants said to be preparing to launch a crude rocket from Gaza. PNA/Xinhua
