PNoy not keen on granting pardon, says DOJ chief
President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” C. Aquino III will not grant presidential pardon to greet the new year, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
This was after President Aquino ordered the Board of Pardon and Parole (BPP), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to review the names of those who were recommended for the grant of presidential pardon.
DOJ Secretary Laila De Lima on Tuesday said that the President does not want his privilege of granting pardon to be abused by those who were incarcerated for cases involving rape and illegal drugs.
De Lima added that the present administration also does not want a repetition of the grant of presidential parole or pardon then to controversial personalities, who were detained because of controversial cases.
Of the more than 200 inmates who were recommended for the grant of presidential pardon, 74 were for commutation of their respective jail sentences.
However, the President still wanted an additional justification on why such inmates should be granted presidential pardon or parole. PNA
