PNP still clueless on Lacson’s whereabouts

MANILA, Philippines – the Philippine National Police (PNP) still remain clueless on the real whereabouts of Senator Panfilo Lacson, who is wanted for the murder of publicist, Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito ten-years ago.

PNP Chief, Director General Raul Bacalzo said that they have been receiving numerous informations regarding the Lacson’s whereabouts, which he said are all subject for validation and verification.

“We have information that he (Lacson) left the country, but he never came back and there are other informations saying that he had returned, which came out in the papers,” Bacalzo said in a chance interview Wednesday night.

The PNP chief also assured that his relationship with Senator Lacson, who was his superior officer in the now defunct Military Intelligence Security Group (MISG) during the Martial Law, will not have any bearing on their manhunt operation.

“We do not waiver on our committment to serve the warrant of arrest, we will not give Senator Lacson a special treatment, any form of special treatment… only due process of law, I can assure you of that,” Bacalzo said.

The PNP Chief added. “Senator Lacson used to be in the PNP and he is now a fugitive from justice… I would like to state from the outset that since the warrant of arrest was issued, we have already started our manhunt operations against him,”

Lacson, a former PNP chief, left the country last February, days before a warrant of arrest could be issued against him by a Manila Regional Trial for the celebrated Dacer-Corbito double murder case.

“We are not saying that he is out of the country… but, we have no reports that he has gone back to the country and we have dedicated teams for that… teams that are looking for him,” Bacalzo said.

The tracker teams were formed after Interior and Local Goverment Secretary Jesse Robredo said that he was not inclined to approve the PNP’s proposal of P2 million reward for the arrest of the fugitive senator.

But, a senior PNP official who spoke on condition of anonymity said that tracking down the fugitive senator and former PNP chief, would be difficult, noting Lacson’s background as intelligence officer.

“It will be really difficult to track him down since he knows how to evade being tracked and he knows how the PNP operates… and tracking him down will be a tough job for us,” the PNP official said.

Lacson, also a member of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 71, is facing double-murder charges in connection with the murder of publicist, Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito in late 2000. Anthony Vargas
