4 killed, 14 injured in bus explosion in Makati
AT least four people were killed while more than a dozen were wounded in a bus explosion along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Makati City on Tuesday.
“Apat ang patay at 14 ang injured (Four are dead and 14 are injured),” Metro Manila police chief Director Nicanor Bartolome told dzRH radio in interview.
The blast occurred inside a Newman Goldliner air-conditioned bus (TXJ-710) shortly before 2 p.m., according to a report on dzBB radio quoting Senior Superintendent Froilan Bonifacio, Makati Police chief.
President Benigno Aquino III immediately condoled with the families of the victims, saying he had ordered all concerned government agencies to provide assistance to them.
“Unang una po, gusto naming ipabatid na nakikiramay po kami sa namatay dito sa trahedya sa pagsabog ng isang bus sa EDSA…Sa kasalukuyan po ay inatasan na natin at kumikilos na ang lahat ng ahensya ng gobyerno para unang-una, biyan ng pag- aaruga itong mga nasaktan,” he said at a press briefing in Malacañang.
(We are condoling with the families of the victims of this tragedy. I’ve ordered the concerned government agencies to provide them with all kinds of assistance.)
It was the second bus-related incident since Monday, when rush-hour traffic along the elevated Manila-bound portion of Skyway was snarled after a passenger bus caught fire. No one was hurt in that incident.
Bartolome said police in Metro Manila are now on full alert following Tuesday’s explosion.
Earlier reports said 17 people were injured in the explosion.
