Extortionist disguising as priest nabbed in Iloilo City
AN extortionist disguising as a priest was arrested by operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) here while in the act of holding a Sunday mass in one of the chapels in Iloilo City city.
The suspect, Charles Fontanilla, was celebrating a mass at a chapel along Ledesma Street, City Proper when the NBI operatives pounced on him.
Fontanilla has been the subject of a complaint lodged by Catholic faithfuls in the area for quite sometime already after they discovered that he was an impostor.
His true identity has been confirmed after his name was not found in the list of priests under the Archdiocese of Jaro.
Early last year, the NBI already planned the arrest of Fontanilla through an entrapment operation but his arrest was deferred for unknown reasons which the lawmen declined to elaborate further.
The suspect’s extortion activity was made every time he heard a mass in the said chapel where he distributed an envelope being passed around for the churchgoers to place their donations.
Apart from this, Fontanilla asked donations from several prominent personalities in Iloilo City. PNA
