Fruit downs 23 pupils in Sta. Maria, Laguna
AT least 23 pupils aged seven to 12 were hospitalized Thursday after eating fruits of “tubang bakod” or purging nut, a wild plant on their school ground in Sta. Maria, Laguna.
Dr. Renato R. Anonuevo, Laguna provincial health officer, said the victims, all students of the Bagumbayan Elementary School, felt sick and vomited two hours after eating the plant’s fruits and were rushed to the General Cailles Hospital in nearby Pakil town for treatment.
Dr. Anonuevo, however, said he received reports from the General Cailles Hospital that nine of the 23 children were discharged from said hospital the following day.
School teachers of Bagumbayan said the tubang bakod has medicinal properties but its fruits should not be eaten. PNA
