Group slams Labor Sec’s denial of impact of price hikes
The Kilusang Mayo Uno lambasted today Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz’ recent pronouncement that price hikes have no impact yet on people’s wages.
“May ‘tama’ itong si Baldoz kung hindi niya nakikita ang napakalaking tama sa sahod at buhay ng mga Pilipino ng sunud-sunod na pagtaas ng mga presyo,” said KMU Executive vice chairperson Joselito Ustarez.
“In just the past month, a bombardment of price hikes have hit us one after the other – from the SLEX, NLEX, SCTEX tolls, to oil prices, to taxi fares, to LPG, sugar prices, and bread prices. More are sure to hit us in the coming days – the MRT and LRT fare hikes, electric bill hikes, possible fare hikes in jeeneys and buses, and price hikes in more goods as an aftershock of the toll and fare hikes.
“Perhaps Baldoz and company were shielded from all of these. Afterall, his boss just enjoys buying porsche cars amidst people’s sufferrings,” Ustarez said.
“The looming fare hike in the MRT and LRT is P10 per ride, or P20 if back-and-forth. Monthly, it will be around P400-P600, which is already equivalent to our monthly bill for water or half a sack of rice. Can Baldoz live on one month with without water or rice?”
KMU added that before the fireworks of price hikes this new year, the International Labor Organization already said that the wage level in the country is one of the worst hit wage levels in the world. A recent survey of the Social Weather Stations also shows that hunger incidence in the country has increased by 18% in the last three months.
“How much more hunger and poverty do Baldoz and co. want to see before the impact of price hikes hit them?”
KMU reiterated calls for the immediate deliberation and passage of the P125 nation-wide wage hike bill filed by Anakpawis partylist as Congress sessions resume today. D’Jay Lazaro
