Let PNoy choose who he wants as Comelec chief – PPCRV
THE Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) believes that President Aquino is bent on appointing an election law expert as the next head of the poll body.
Henrietta de Villa, PPCRV national chairperson, said Aquino is on the “reform agenda” and wanted to resolve poll-related cases immediately.
“We thought that the President was considering an outsider but it seems he is more bent on one who knows election laws very well,” De Villa said.
De Villa said it doesn’t matter to them who gets appointed as long the next poll body chief is strictly non-partisan. “The president should be left to do what he thinks he should do,” she said.
“It’s up to him to see who would fit the role of chairman that is needed for the challenges that are posed to Comelec because of the automated elections and others things,” she added.
Malacañang yesterday denied rumors that the competition for Comelec chairmanship has been narrowed down to veteran election lawyers Romulo Macalintal and Sixto Brillantes Jr.
The PPCRV chief, however, believes that Aquino is “zeroing in” on Macalintal and Brillantes.
Macalintal was former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo’s lawyer until May last year.
The lawyer also has ties with Aquino when he served as the latter’s lawyer when he first ran for congressman for Tarlac’s second district.
Brillantes, meanwhile, served as Aquino’s legal counsel in last year’s presidential elections.
“They are good lawyers… it’s just that there are also considerations whether (their political ties) would affect (there role as Comelec chief),” De Villa said. (CBCPNews)
