Pirates seize Algerian vessel with Filipino crew – report
AN Algerian-owned vessel with Filipino crew was hijacked by Somali pirates, the European Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) reported on Saturday, January 1.
It said pirates seized the 20,586-ton bulk carrier MV BLIDA 150 nautical miles southeast of the port of Salalah, Oman.
The vessel, carrying the cargo of Clinker and with 27 Filipino, Algerian, and Ukranian crewmen on board, was on its way to Dares Salaam in Tanzania when the ship was attacked by the sea bandits.
There are now 28 vessels and 654 hostages being held by pirates off the coast of Somalia, according to EUNAVFOR.
EUNAVFOR is a military operation launched by the European Council to protect vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean that are vulnerable to piracy.
