Rizal braces for ‘disastrous’ 2011

RIZAL’S Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRMMC) recently held its first full council meeting in response to emerging concerns on environmental and disaster awareness of the New Year.

The first council meeting was held at the provincial capitol in Antipolo City led by Rizal Gov. Jun Ynares III as its chairman, with representation coming from various stakeholders in the province.

The council was initially oriented by Vicente Tomazar, regional director of Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Region 4 and lawyer Eunice Agsaoay-Sano of the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Concerns on the operationalization at the national as well at the local level were raised and clarified in depth during an open forum in the council meeting.

The first council meetings likewise served as venue to craft an action plan to prepare the province on emergencies and natural disasters that may occur in the future.

Rizal is one of the province hardest hit by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009.

“With the passage of the new law on DRRM, it is high time that Rizal PDRRMC, formerly PDCC, reconfigures and realigns mechanisms to manage disaster risks through its Action Plan,” Ynares said. Anthony Vargas
