Angelo Reyes kills self
FORMER Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes died early Tuesday after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest.
Health Secretary Enrique Ona said Reyes was declared dead at 8:32 a.m. at Quirino Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City.
Reyes was brought from Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City where he was reportedly visiting the tomb of his mother.
“At 8:32 a.m., he was pronounced dead. Ang finding namin isang gunshot wound lang… Meron siyang gunshot wound, isa lang, sa left, sa location ng puso,” Ona said.
He said Reyes was rushed to the hospital at about 7:30 a.m., with his blood pressure already very low, his skin “cold and clammy,” and with virtually no vital signs.
Ona said doctors tried to revive Reyes for 45 minutes but failed to get his blood pressure up.
“Wala nang pulso at hindi na humihinga,” he said.
Citing information reaching him, Ona said Reyes was rushed to the hospital with a driver, an aide and two sons.
“Dinala siya sa Quirino Hospital na may tama sa chest. Inaantabayanan pa, they are trying to revive him,” Reyes’ lawyer Bonifacio Alentajan said in an earlier interview on dzBB radio.
A report by dzBB’s Allan Gatus said some of Reyes’ relatives rushed to the emergency room.
A local village kagawad interviewed by DZBB said Reyes, his bodyguard and two sons arrived at the Loyola Memorial Park at 7 a.m.
“Noong 7:55 a.m., nauna ang anak niya, pinauna sa sasakyan, antay siya doon, pati bodyguard pinalayo. Mamaya may narinig silang putok. Nakita nila si Secretary unti-unti bumagsak sa damo,” the kagawad said.
Reyes is among former military officials who allegedly received millions in “pabaon” (sendoff) gift when he retired from the service.
Reyes was a key figure in the EDSA 2 revolt that ousted then President Joseph Estrada and installed Gloria Arroyo in power.
