NFSL, FUMC help Mt. Bulusan ashfall victims
THE Naval Forces Southern Luzon (NFSL) initiated a medical mission Saturday, February 26, on the affected areas of the volcanic ashes from Mt. Bulusan.
The Legazpi City-based NFSL, under the command of Commodore Joel E. Babas, and the Outreach Ministry of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) gave free medical services to the residents of Brgy. Buraburan, Juban, Sorsogon.
About 250 families who were exposed with the ashfall benefited from the said activity.
NFSL and FUMC recognized the hazards of exposure from the ashes of the eruption, which may trigger respiratory and eye problems and aggravate illnesses such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma.
Mt. Bulusan released about 700,000 cubic meter of volcanic ash last week, affecting the areas of Cogon, Mombon, and Mapaso posing a serious health risk to the people and resulting in the loss of their livelihood.
Phivolcs-Legaspi said: “The unknown quantity of ashes deposited in its summit, may pose a danger for a Lahar flow if there is a concentrated rainfall in the summit.” Verlin Ruiz
