‘Prosecute ex-Governor Reyes’ says green group
ENVIRONMENTAL activist group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment welcomes the recent developments in the case of Dr. Gerry Ortega’s slay.
“The surrender of ex-marine Rodolfo Edrad, Jr. and his confession that the former Palawan Governor Joel Reyes is the alleged mastermind of the killing is one step further to attaining justice for Dr. Ortega. The next step should be to immediately prosecute the former governor,” says Clemente Bautista, Jr. national coordinator of Kalikasan PNE.
According to Edrad’s statements, Dr. Gerry’s assassination was allegedly ordered by former Governor Reyes because of his active campaign against the former governor’s pro-mining policies and the misuse of funds coming from the royalties of the Malampaya project.
“Because of Edrad’s statement, the involvement of mining companies in the slay of Dr. Ortega should also be investigated, particularly the mining projects approved during the term of Governor Reyes,” Bautista added.
Dr. Ortega is known throughout Palawan as an environmentalist and a staunch anti-mining activist. He used to air hard-hitting comments on mining in his radio program in DWAR Palawan. He is the first environmental defender killed under the Aquino administration and 27thanti-mining activist slain since 2001.
“We urge the authorities to pursue and immediately prosecute all those involved in the murder of Dr. Ortega,” Baustista said.
