Grade 5 pupil killed in rebel attack
A GRADE 5 pupil was killed by a stray bullet when a group of New People’s Army (NPA) harassed a militia outpost in a remote village in Negros Occidental on Tuesday, March 29.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo named the victim of stray bullet as Baying Amion, 14, of Sitio Pulopangyan in Brgy. Bug-ang, Toboso town of the said province.
Amion was hit by a bullet on the face and died on the spot.
The harassment coincided with the 42nd founding anniversary of the NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
Major John Andrada, spokesman of the army’s 3rd Infantry, said in the reports that Amion died from the bullet fired indiscriminately by NPA rebels, which have also hit several nearby houses.
“The communist terrorists’ firing position is just a few meters away from the detachment, which is at the back to where our CAFGU’s return their fire,” Andrada said adding the rebels withdrew after five minutes.
The army official added that NPA rebels also harassed the headquarters of the 62nd Infantry Brigade in Brgy. Bato, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
“But these all went to naught because our soldiers have stepped up their defensive stance against the attackers,” Adrada said. Anthony Vargas
