Merci impeachment must lead to GMA investigation, prosecution – Anakbayan
MEMBERS of the youth group Anakbayan held a picket Thursday in front of the House of Representatives to show their support to the impeachment proceedings against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.
“We, and millions of our fellow anti-corruption youths, have waited for this moment for a long time” said Anakbayan secretary-general Charisse Banez.
Banez, and Anakbayan, are some of the founding individuals and groups of YOUTH ACT NOW!, an anti-corruption youth alliance which was formed at the height of the ZTE-NBN exposes back in 2008. The alliance also played a major role in the historical Feb. 29 rally of the same year in which an estimated 80,000 people took part to protest the said corruption scandals which implicated the former First Family.
The group added that the impeachment should finally lead to the criminal investigation and prosecution of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“Once Gloria Arroyo’s #1 hatchet man, or should we say woman, in the justice system is removed, then the way is clear for bringing the most corrupt and hated person in the Philippines to justice herself” said Banez.
She added “Noynoy Aquino is wasting the time and efforts of the lawmakers, complainants, witnesses, and everyone else who made the impeachment impossible, if this will not lead to Gloria Arroyo being made to finally answer for her crimes against the people”.
According to the youth leader, Gutierrez ‘buried’ not just corruption cases against Arroyo and her cohorts, but also cases of human rights violations committed under the previous administration.
