Show no Mercy for the wrongdoers
SHOW no Mercy for the wrongdoersBishop Martin Jumoad is asking senators to vote according to their conscience in judging Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez who has been impeached by Congress on a vote of 212-46 on various criminal counts.
Whether Bishop Martin is for or against the impeachment of Gutierrez, we are not certain of because he appears to be leaning on the conscience of the senators who will act as judges during the trial.
Bishop Martin must have forgotten though that Congress as a body is a political animal with no conscience at all, unlike other animals we know. As judges, they should rely mainly on evidence and, sad to say, their political leanings.
Gutierrez is crying foul, saying “dark politics ruled the day” when the House of Representatives voted for her impeachment last Tuesday but the truth is that Congress waited like eternity for the chief ombudsman to act on issues of graft and corruption during the regieme of then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
“They should vote according to their conscience so that our government will be the government of laws and not affiliated by political party. The law must prevail,” the bishop said.
But the law never prevailed during the time of Gutierrez because she never acted on the complaints of graft and corruption even to the day she was being impeached.
They must be conscious of that and the charges that they must weigh according to the merits of the charges, the bishop added, apparently defending the unpopular ombudsman.
He said Gutierrez must stay “humble” and accept that her fate is now in the hands of the Senate.
Now, Bishop Martin is telling Mercy to be humble enough to accept her weaknesses so that the people would say that she is a woman of honor and integrity.
I do not know what the priest is trying to imply. It looks like he wants Mercy to be pronounced innocent of the charges against her because she is a woman of honor and integrity.
Those who voted “no” came from both the administration and the opposition bloc, including former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, Siquijor Rep. Orlando Fua, and Deputy Speaker Jesus Crispin Remulla.
Are they also the men and women of the senate of honor and integrity like Gutirrez? Raul Valino
