State employees call for Merci’s speedy impeachment
LEADERS and affiliate unions of the Confederation for Unity, Recognition and Advancement of Government Employees (COURAGE) Wednesday expressed guarded optimism over the progress of the impeachment proceedings against Ombudsman Merciditas Gutierrez.
“COURAGE welcomes the recent developments on the impeachment proceedings versus Merceditas Gutierrez. Rank-and-file government employees nationwide join the public clamor for Gutierrez’ swift removal from her post. As public servants,we are insulted and appalled over Gutierrez’ failure to act upon the numerous cases of corruption filed against top government officials; particularly those involving Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her cronies such as Winston Garcia who built a fortune pilfering GSIS funds. Instead of being the protector of the people, Gutierrez chose to serve and protect the crooks in government. She will go down in history as the protector of the most reviled president after Marcos,” COURAGE National President Ferdinand R. Gaite said.
The labor leader also challenged the Aquino administration to be vigilant regarding Gutierrez’ eventual sentence.
“After four long years of impunity, it is about time for Gutierrez to finally account for her crimes, it is time for the Filipino people to finally get the justice that they deserve. If the Aquino administration is sincere in its’ desire to wipe out corruption in the bureaucracy, Noynoy should then exhaust all possible measures to ensure that Gutierrez is held criminally liable for her complicity in protecting corrupt government officials,” Gaite declared.
