The reports said the encounter took place when elements of the 4th Scout Ranger Battalion conducting combat patrol in the area encountered a group of 15 ASG members under Nurhassanand Long Malat Solaiman.
A firefight quickly ensued between the two sides, resulting in the death of two ASG members and the wounding of two government troops, reports said. One of the killed ASG members was identified as Aslumin Manaba.
The other ASG members fled in different directions while troops recovered from the encounter site several firearms that included four M16 rifles, one M14 and one M203 grenade launcher.
Basilan is the known territory and birthplace of the Al-Qaeda linked ASG that was behind the bombings, kidnappings, murders and extortion activities in the Western Mindanao region, as well as terror attacks in Metro Manila. Anthony Vargas
