MILF commander, son, killed in a firefight in Zamboanga

SEVEN Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters were killed following a firefight with government security forces in a remote Island off Zamboanga peninsula on Thursday morning, police and military reports said Friday.

Reports reaching Camp Crame said that the firefight took place at around 8:30 a.m. in the remote island village of Kalianta, Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The firefight occurred as combined police and military forces were dispatched to the island to serve the warrant of arrest against Kamsa Asnadal, a notorious MILF commander, the reports said.

The reports added that Asnadal and his son Omar were among the seven alleged MILF were killed in the firefight that lasted for several hours, which also resulted to the wounding of two policemen.

Asnadal’s group is reportedly involved in extortion activities in Zamboanga peninsula and was tagged by the police and military as being behind of the string of attacks against police and military forces in the region.

The group is also suspected to be behind the attack and burning of a Rural Transit bus last Tuesday in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, where an army officer, his wife and a militiaman was killed, the reports said. Anthony Vargas
