Top leftist rebel leader arrested by govt troops
A TOP female New People’s Army (NPA) rebel in the eastern Visayas region and her aide were arrested on Thursday morning, April 7, by government security forces.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo, the military general headquarters in Manila, identified the arrested top NPA rebel leader as Elen Balanquit alias Maan and her aide as a certain Ivan.
Reports said Balanquit was the executive committee member of the Northern Samar Provincial Committee (NSPPC) of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), the NPA’s main political arm.
The rebel leader and her aide were arrested by a combined police and military forces at around 11:45 a.m. in Barangay Makiwalo, Mondragon town in Northern Samar.
They were arrested based on the warrant of arrest issued by the Regional Trial Court in Laoang town also in Northern Samar.
Balanquit and her aide were detained at the Northern Samar Provincial Police office for investigation. Anthony Vargas
